Keeping pets safe in summer heat

NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- The temperatures are rising and our furry friends feel the heat. During the hot summer months, there are a few things you can do to keep your pets safe. Provide plenty of water so they can stay hydrated. Also be aware of just how hot it can get outside. Have shady areas if your pet stays outdoors... And never leave your pet inside a car. With or without the windows down. It just gets too hot. Wilmington resident Jason Benoit says he'll be taking his pet to local dog parks for some safe fun this summer. Benoit said, "It socializes them, lets them play with other dogs, there's plenty of places to get shade and plenty of water everywhere." Pet owners are also encouraged to keep a close watch over restrained pets, whether out in public or at home. The New Hanover County leash law prohibit owners from securing pets on a leash without supervision.
