WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Now that the New Hanover Co. sales tax increase has passed, the question is: who will be on the commission to deal with the budget. It was a crowded race with four Democrats and seven Republicans seeking the two nominations for each party. On the Democratic side, Deborah Butler and Sid Causey garnered the most votes followed by Dale Smith and Tom Gale. "First of all, there was no soap in the ladies room and the air conditioner is not working, so apparently we've made a couple of cuts already," Butler said. "I'll have to get in to the budget to see what we need to fine-tune and surgically re-do some things." As for Republicans, Rick Catlin received 29 percent of the votes. Incumbent Bill Caster came in second. He was followed closely by Brian Berger, which may lead to a run-off. "We still have some cuts to make, but I think we can find those efficiencies," Catlin said.
