Most local gas stations not equipped with generators

READ MORE: Local gas stations not equipped with generators
WILMINGTON -- If a hurricane hits, one thing people are going to want in the wake of a storm is gasoline. Are local gas stations are prepared to help if a natural disaster strikes here? If you've lived through a hurricane you know gasoline can be a valuable resource. But when the power goes out so do the pumps. Wilmington resident David Rodgers said, "Well, I was here during Fran and I know the chaos that occurred during Fran, so I think there should be generators provided during a storm." NewsChannel 3 hit the streets in Wilmington to find out if local gas stations had a back-up in case of a power loss. Cecil Worsley owns a number of Carolina Petro and Exxon stations in the area. His employees told us none of the 130 stores has a generator, nor did the BP or Crown stations on Market Street. Of all the gas stations visited t he privately-owned Shop and Go in downtown Wilmington was the only one that had a generator. Owner Walter Hughes said he wanted to be able to give customers a place to go for water, food, and fuel. Some people we spoke to say they would make an effort to give business to gas stations that go the extra mile. Wilmington resident Ellen Kiernan said, "I'm sure if there was a listing of who those companies that was put out in advance they would probably be increasing their business in advance of a hurricane." A new law in Florida requires all gas stations to have backup generators. It is not a law here in North Carolina.
