Drag crash raises questions

SAMPSON COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- We're learning more about the crash at Harrell's Raceway that killed a spectator Sunday night. Questions were raised about whether the track was required to have EMS on site.

According to the International Hot Rod Association, Harrell's Raceway is an unsanctioned track. That means it does not have to have an ambulance or first responders.

Sunday's crash killed a spectator when a race car crashed, and the engine went flying in to the crowd. According to published reports, the track's owner did have insurance, and according to our research, the track was operating legally.

The Sampson County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident.
