Wilmington - article courtesy UNCW - Eighth-ranked Purdue held off a furious charge by No. 4 Southern Cal to capture the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship Friday at the Country Club of Landfall's Pete Dye Course. The Boilermakers finished the 72-hole event with a total of one-over-par 284-294-280-295=1153 to claim their first national title with a one-stroke decision over the Trojans. USC ended the event with a two-over-par 282-288-295-289=1154 scorecard while seventh-ranked Alabama claimed third just four shots off the pace at 289-288-294-286=1157. Oklahoma State sophomore Caroline Hedwall carded a four-under-par 68 for the second straight round to capture individual medalist honors with a 12-under-par total of 70-70-68-68=276. Third-round leader Jennifer Johnson of Arizona State took second with an eight-under-par 67-70-70-73=280. Purdue junior Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (67-73-70-71=281) and Auburn junior Cydney Clanton (72-71-72-66=281) tied for third at seven-under-par. LSU junior and individual entry Megan McChrystal set an NCAA championship record with an eight-under-par 64 in her final round Friday, eclipsing the old mark of 65 set by four players on five previous occasions.
