WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Even though we've only known which candidates will be in the race for less than a week - the race for US senate in North Carolina is well underway.

The first debate of the campaign was held in Wilmington on Saturday between incumbent Richard Burr, democratic challenger Elaine Marshall and libertarian Michael Bietler.

while the candidates voiced differing opinions on topics such as immigration reform, offshore drilling, and how to solve a growing deficit, they did maintain one common theme.

“Can we fix a broken system in Washington?” said current Secretary of State Elaine Marshall.

Incumbent Richard Burr said, “It’s time that Washington quit talking and listened for a while.”

Third party candidate Dr. Michael Bietler asked the question, “Are you happy with what is happening in Washington DC?”

Latest polls show Senator Burr maintaining a small lead over challenger Elaine Marshall with libertarian candidate Beitler a distant third.
