SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- Southport is already busy with visitors in town for the holiday weekend. The symbol of our freedom translates to dollar signs for local businesses.
The sound of money changing hands is familiar at Bullfrog Corner. It's been bustling.
"The lines are continuous all day long," owner Marianne Long said. "It's non-stop."
We even ran in to the Mayor Pro Tem of Charlotte and his family shopping. He says it's good to see people pumping money in to local businesses.
"In the wake of what have obviously been tough times, it certainly is always good to have people come to any area to come to to vacation, and to take time to help the economy out," Patrick Cannon said.
And other visitors spent the afternoon doing the same, like Glenna Ollis who's been visiting the area for six years.
"I bought some jalapeno pepper preserves, and I bought another necklace for my friend who is watering my plants while I'm gone," Ollis said.
The Visitor's Center estimates the population of Southport triples during the North Carolina 4th of July Festival. With the holiday weekend just beginning, the foot traffic is a good sign of things to come.
