Brunswick boatyard first "green" marina in NC

READ MORE: Brunswick boatyard first "green" marina in NC

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A Brunswick County boatyard is using locally-developed green technology to become the first EPA compliant marina in the state.

For years marinas in north carolina have failed to meet EPA regulations on pressure washing runoff. Now, Specialty Boatworks just across the river from Wilmington is up to speed after installing a new machine made by Clean Marine Solutions. It takes the toxic runoff and filters out heavy metals leaving clean water behind.

"I believe... Specialty Boatworks is going to be able to market Specialty as a clean, green marina," Clean Marine Solutions CEO David Flagler said. "The only one in the state to be deemed compliant."

The water left from the filtration process has a lower amount of heavy metal than the EPA standard for drinking water. In the end, the filtered water is reused to pressure wash more boats, which also helps slash the boatyard's water bills.
