WILMINGTON -- A major intersection on Market Street is frustrating many drivers. About 50,000 cars travel on Market Street each day. This is well over its intended capacity. Drivers often find themselves waiting a while at the intersection of Market Street and New Centre Drive. The longest wait at that intersection seems to be when making a left onto Market from New Centre. Nearby business owners say accidents are not uncommon in that intersection. Drivers we talked to said they sometimes wait for two or three cycles of the light to turn before they actually get to go. Wilmington driver Bob Whitestone, "We're here waiting two or three minutes every time, maybe more. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's annoying." The City Traffic Engineer said there is a plan to clear up the congestion and reduce the wait. The idea is to add a right turn lane to that intersection, which would devote an entire lane to just left-hand turns. A draft of that plan is expected to be submitted to the City in August.
