Verizon sets up CFCC scholarship for domestic violence survivor

Wilmington, NC – The Verizon Wireless Wilmington Call Center has established a $2,000 scholarship at Cape Fear Community College for a survivor of domestic violence. The scholarship will cover tuition, textbook expenses and related fees for an individual referred by Wilmington’s Domestic Violence Shelter and Services. Cape Fear Community College Foundation will award the scholarship before the fall 2010 semester begins.

Mary Ann Lama, executive director of Domestic Violence Shelter and Services commented, “We are grateful for Verizon Wireless’ partnership and continued commitment to this important issue. The company’s support of this scholarship reinforces our mission to empower domestic violence victims, encourage their independence and help them and their families break the cycle of domestic violence.”

Verizon Wireless is a recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue. Locally, the Verizon Wireless Wilmington Call Center supports a number of organizations that serve domestic violence victims.

Verizon Wireless is establishing a similar scholarship at Charlotte’s Central Piedmont Community College. The scholarships are part of the company’s nationwide HopeLine program. Through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless collects, refurbishes and recycles old cell phones and accessories, and uses the proceeds to provide funding to domestic violence organizations and survivors.
