RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) -- Lawmakers plan to drop the gavel on the current legislative session late tonight or early tomorrow. When it happens, and barring the calling of a special session later this year, it will mark the end of two historic careers for legislators from our area: Senators R.C. Soles and Julia Boseman. It's been quite the journey for the two senators from southeastern North Carolina, but like most things, it's coming to an end. "I'm excited to go home and have a private life, which I haven't had in 10 years, so I look forward to being out of the public eye," Boseman said. Soles says the end of his legislative career is bittersweet. "You cannot live 42 years of your life, half the time I'm in Raleigh, meeting people, and not feel some regret when you're leaving," he said. Soles and Boseman are vacating their Democratic seats in the Senate. The two have made history. Boseman is the first openly gay senator. With 42 years in the House and Senate, Soles has served longer than any other legislator ever. The two say despite some bumps in the road, it's been a memorable run, and they hope to remain active in their communities. "We fought hard for things back home, and I'm certainly going to miss that fight, but I'm sure I will continue to be involved here in some role," Boseman said. "Time goes on," Soles said. "There's just as many people that can do as well as I have, and the district will continue to be represented, and I hope I'll be a part of it." Soles and Boseman said as this door closes, another one opens. "It's been a good ride," Soles said. "There have been some things that I may have done differently. You can't live 42 years of your life and be perfect all the way." Said Boseman, "I will miss being in Raleigh and working for the citizens of New Hanover County, but it's time for a new chapter of my life." Soles and Boseman say they'll continue to practice law in our area. They also say they're looking forward to spending more time with their family.
