Rain helps put out Wilmington wildfire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Firefighters spent last night and this morning putting out a woods fire at George Anderson Blvd. and South 17th Street in Wilmington. Forestry crews and the Wilmington Fire Department responded to the fire around midnight.

Both departments were able to get the fire under control around 5 a.m. Crews worked this morning to contain hot spots. They say they may know what caused the fire.

"What it looks like, a homeless (person) started the fire in several different locations," said assistant county ranger Sloan Goins. "I would say in six probably different sets."

Crews cleared the scene by mid-morning. They say rain helped put out the hot spots.
