WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Downtown Wilmington has seen a lot of changes for the better recently, but not every piece of property is looking great. A partially torn down building on the corner of Brunswick and Front Streets seems out place when you consider all the renovations and new additions downtown. The building is empty and surrounded by rubble in what looks like a demolition project that came up short. So can you believe this land next to the new convention center will be home to a brand new building in the coming years? Chuck Schoninger, who owns the property, says the piece of land has not been forgotten. He plans to finish tearing the building down in the next three to four weeks. But besides just getting rid of the eyesore, something bigger is in the works. "We've got really exciting plans of hopefully a Hotel Indigo or a hotel of that nature going in that corner," Schoninger, of Riverfront Holdings II LLC, said. Schoninger owns much of the land near the Wilmington Convention Center. He says his goal is not only to build this one hotel, but a whole downtown development including a minor league ballpark. "The focus should be for our community in my opinion on making our downtown that mecca," Schoninger said. Schoninger says the hotel should be up and running in two years. As for his complete downtown project, he estimated a time frame of ten to twelve years.
