School board reveals investigation details from 40-year-old coach's personnel files

READ MORE: School board reveals investigation details from 40-year-old coach's personnel files
New details in the Brunswick County School Board's investigation in to the relationship between a teenage student and her coach. Superintendent Katie McGee has made public part of coach Brent Wuchae's confidential personnel file. The school board has been widely criticized for not doing enough to stop the relationship between 16-year-old Windy Hager and her coach turned husband, Brent Wuchae. Now, board members are firing back. It's not often the public gets a glimpse into into private files. However a state statute allows school boards to maintain their integrity if they are questioned. The Brunswick County school Board is doing just that. It's released information from the personnel file of Brent Wuchae, the South Brunswick High School track coach who married one of his athletes, 16-year-old Windy Hager. The official release summarizes the steps the school took to determine if anything inappropriate was going on between Wuchae and Hager. It starts in the fall of 2006, when Windy's father approached the South Brunswick High principal. Cell phone records showing text messages between Hager and Wuchae caught the attention of administrators. The school attorney says the principal acted swiftly. "When the parent came in, the parent said I wanted the teacher to stay away from the student and that's exactly what the principal directed," Brian Shaw, the Brunswick County School Board attorney, said. Wuchae was told to stay away from Windy, and for a while, he did. But it didn't stay that way for long. "From time to time, somebody would raise an issue and school officials would look at it, but there just wasn't any evidence, but that all changed in early May," Shaw said. Wuchae was suspended with pay on May 3rd. Shaw says reports of notes being passed between Windy and Wuchae as well as conversations caused the suspension. School documents say the superintendent was ready to fire him but he resigned instead on June 18th. Shaw maintains there was nothing to point to a romantic relationship between the coach and his athlete. "There wasn't just that type of evidence until the teacher resigned and then we learned a couple of hours later that he had gotten married," Shaw said, "It really floored us." Brian Shaw says the school board did a background check when they hired Wuchae and it didn't reveal anything unusual about his work his history in Guiliford County schools. A second call to Guilford County schools after the investigation began still didn't yield any unusual details about Wuchae's past.
