Perfect timing for new UNCW building

READ MORE: Perfect timing for new UNCW building

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you were to walk into the new nursing building on the University of Carolina Wilmington campus you might think you were in a hospital. The new building comes at a perfect time. According to North Carolina Area Health Education Centers, the elderly population in the state will double by 2020, creating large demands for skilled nurses and nursing assistants.

"UNCW is committed to increasing the number of health care professionals," said Nursing Director James McCann. "This building represents UNCW's commitment to grow health care programs."

The building of course has classrooms and auditoriums but it also has several simulation areas; like an operating room, a pediatrics ward, and a maternity ward just to name a few.

"Where we were before was very small, we were very crowded," said nursing student Carrie McGrath. "Now we have this huge building and all these simulation labs. I feel better prepared to go out in the community and perform the same skills that we're learning in the lab."

The new building is also helping the university to expand some of its programs. Next spring, a new Master of Science Clinical Research program begins.
