McIntyre campaign: 'No comment' on Breazeale endorsement

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A day after one of the more bizarre endorsements in recent political history, the campaign that received the endorsement responded. Kind of.

WWAY tried contacting Rep. Mike McIntyre and his campaign yesterday after former opponent Will Breazeale, a Republican who had attacked McIntyre during their 2008 race for the 7th District seat in Congress and leading up to the Republican primary this year, said he now supports the seven-term incumbent Democrat. We did not receive any response from our calls yesterday.

Today, WWAY political reporter Kevin Wuzzardo called McIntyre's office in Washington again and left a voicemail for his Chief of Staff Dean Mitchell asking that either Mitchell or the Congressman call the station. This afternoon, McIntyre's Campaign Field Director Justin Smith responded with an e-mail that said, "With regard to the voicemail request you left Dean Mitchell, we have no comment."

McIntyre easily beat Breazeale during the 2008 election. This year Breazeale lost to fellow Republican Ilario Pantano by 17 percentage points in May's primary.

McIntyre and Pantano will hold the second of four pre-election debates Friday night at James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville.
