Residents help pave way for Elizabethtown revitalization

READ MORE: Residents help pave way for Elizabethtown revitalization

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) -- Talk about being part of the community. A Bladen County town is getting a facelift, and residents are helping pave the way.

Civic leaders in Elizabethtown took a novel approach to funding a downtown revitalization. Soon downtown Elizabethtown will look like a whole other place. Everything is being replaced, from the benches to the trash receptacles, and the majority of the items are being purchased by the public.

"My wife and her family were some of the original people who developed Elizabethtown," resident Jim Cole said. He and his wife will forever be part of this project. They're among the dozens of resident who have purchased an item that will bear their name for everyone to see.

"It'll be here for a long time for everybody to see and enjoy," Cole said.

So far many others have followed suit by sponsoring many of the items.

"We sold all of our park benches, and we sold a number of our planters and garbage receptacles. We do have street bricks remaining. Some of our trees can be donated as well," Town Manager Eddie Madden said.

The town will do its own part in the project as well. Sidewalks will be completely rebuilt. And the power lines above the main strip will now be buried. But town leaders say the main feature will be those items that the community has a chance to mark as their own. By giving them an opportunity to purchase an item to help contribute to this project certainly gives them some ownership and take pride in a project that they've been waiting on for many years.

The project is schedule to be done later this year.
