Wrightsville Beach adding police presence to control raucous crowds

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH (AP) -- There's too much revelry in Wrightsville Beach.

Locals say the bar district is overrun with people trespassing, urinating, vomiting, and fighting.

So Wrightsville police officers are working overtime and off-duty New Hanover County deputies are being called in to help control the disturbances.

The town's also adding two video cameras in the downtown area to aid police in catching offenders.

Police Chief John Carey says the area's been a hot spot for police since he joined the department 25 years ago.

But Carey says there are now more bar hoppers because of the county's growing population, even though the number of bars has decreased.

Peter Davis and his wife live about four blocks from the bar district. He says it's become "a zoo" at night.
