WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Besides raining cats and dogs around here, Bobcats are also reigning down on Wilmington this week. Today was the Charlotte Bobcats' first day of training camp. They're back in the Port City after not coming last year.
The team will be practicing twice a day all this week at UNC Wilmington. It's typically the only time in the season when you hear the phrase two-a-days.
"Having training camp in Charlotte last year was kinda OK, but there were a lot of distractions, because the guys can just go home when they want to," forward Gerald Wallace said. "Here when one player wants to go to the store other players will go with him, so that helps the team bonding that you really need."
Forward Stephen Jackson agreed the trip to Wilmington is important.
"It's very important, because we're not solidified in all of our positions," Jackson said. "A lot of guys are playing for spots. A lot of guys are playing for minutes. It'll be good for us to grow together to see who will be able to play come season time."
And one player whose sure to get a lot of minutes will be guard D.J.. Augustin. He's about to enter his third year in the NBA and with Charlotte.
"I've been working on my body all summer. I'm just trying to get stronger and faster and quicker," Augustin said. "I think we can go far in the playoffs and that's what we're working toward. We don't want to not make it to the playoffs."
Guard Matt Carroll attended training camp in Wilmington two years ago. He was traded to Dallas shortly thereafter, but now he's back with the Bobcats.
"I think a lot of guys in the league are journeymen. That's just how the league works," Carroll said. "You get a phone call to send you to a different city, and you have 24 hours to get there. That's just how the job goes. I love it, but there are some tough parts about it, like that."
Unless Michael Jordan changes his plans, the new owner of the Bobcats will not make an appearance at camp in his hometown this week. He's spending the week in Wales at the Ryder Cup golf event.
The Bobcats play an intrasquad scrimmage Sunday at 5 p.m. at Trask Coliseum. You can pick up your free tickets starting tomorrow morning at the UNCW box office. There is a limit of four tickets per person and 25 tickets for non-profit groups.
