WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation is urging people to drive safely in this rainy weather. They want people to stay off the roads if at all possible.
If you do need to drive, slow down, use your low beams and pull completely off the side of the road if you can't see out your windshield. Most importantly, do not drive through standing water, because it can be a much deeper than you think, and you can easily hydroplane, get stuck, or even get swept off the road.
"This event actually has a strange feeling of Floyd back in '99," David Thomas of the DOT said. "As most of the public knows, we experienced quite a bit of flooding way before any wind storm. Everything is just inundated, and us being in a flat area like we are, it becomes a time element for the water to recede."
The DOT urges people to visit its website http://www.ncdot.gov for accidents, weather information and road closures updated in real time. You can also call 511 from your mobile phone.
