Clothing protects skin from UV rays

READ MORE: New clothing protects skin from UV rays
We all know the benefits of wearing sunscreen, but there's more that you could be doing to protect your skin. There are brands of clothing that are actually made with sun protection in them. Many companies make clothing with a UPF rating, or ultraviolet protection factor. It's similar to SPF ratings of sunscreen, only within the fabric. The UPF scale runs from 15 to 50+. Tim Glover is the general manager at Great Outdoor Provision Company in Wilmington. He says people come in almost daily asking for the sun protective clothing. Glover said, "There's a lot of people that come in that have skin cancer concerns and often their dermatologists or doctors will recommend that they wear sun protective clothing." Glover says the clothing can run anywhere from $30-$70, but that it's durable and worth the sun protection. There's also a product called Sun Guard that you can add to your laundry detergent. It increases the UPF of clothing and lasts for 20 washes.
