WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Three New Hanover County Schools were on lockdown today as police and dogs searched for a man on the loose. For about an hour Hoggard High, Roland-Grise Middle and Alderman Elementary schools were all on lockdown while police were looking for a man wanted on felony warrants.

"I just want to make sure that she's safe and make sure that there's nothing crazy going on," said Leslie Chuntz, who's 9th grade daughter texted her from inside Hoggard during the lockdown.

"I figure, you know one message, you're like, 'Oh they're just doing a practice,' but three, I figured I better swing past the school and see what's going on here," Chuntz said.

Down the street from the high school, someone called in a suspicious man near the Verizon call center off Shipyard Blvd. Police nearly had 27-year-old Andrew Narris in cuffs, wanted for non-violent property crimes, when he ran.

New Hanover County Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Jerry Brewer says police secured nearby schools as a precaution.

"Any time there are schools in the area, we take the upmost importance in getting those schools secure and making sure that everyone is accounted for."

"We were trying to get into school and one of our friends texted us, and he was like, 'There's a lockdown going on,'" Hoggard student Carolina Shepard said.

Brewer said when a school goes on lockdown, kids have to stay in their classrooms, the doors are locked, the lights are turned off and the blinds are closed. No one is allowed to come in or out of the classrooms or the building.

Narris also has an outstanding warrant for larceny, forgery and attempting to cash a bad check. He's still on the run.

Narris is described as a bald, white man wearing a black shirt and cargo pants. He's 5'10" and weighs 250 pounds.
Anyone who knows where Narris is should call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600. Information also may be submitted anonymously through Text-A-Tip. Enter Tip708 and the message and send to CRIMES (274637).
