BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- For the first time in decades, the 8th Senate District will have a new voice in Raleigh. For 34 years that seat has been filled by Democrat R.C. Soles, who is retiring. The battle to replace him is between Democrat David Redwine and Republican Bill Rabon.
Rabon is a veterinarian in Brunswick County. He says he feels compelled to serve his state and nation, wanting to steer government control away from people's everyday lives.
Rabon is a Columbus County native. He attended NC State and the University of Georgia, later returning to the area after finishing up with his education.
"I was Brunswick County's first and only veterinarian for years and years, and I've been doing that now for 35 years," Rabon said. "I'm a partner in three veterinarian practices here."
So with a successful career already why does Rabon want to go into politics?
"My father passed away last year. I haven't talked to mom about this. My father went to war for the country and put up a lot. He was willing to make sacrifices, and I think the time has come for some of us now need to fight for our state and country again," Rabon said. "I don't like the direction my state is heading in. I've been proud of it all my life, and suddenly I'm not so proud as I think I should be, and I think I can make everyone proud of it again."
Rabon wants to address the issues that seem to be on every Republican's radar.
"Our spending is out of control," he said. "We have too much government in our everyday lives. We don't let private enterprise work anymore. We want government to hand everything down to us and mandated to us, and I would like to see that reversed."
In his spare time Rabon likes to hunt, fish and farm
"I like being outside, being outdoors," he said.
Rabon says the campaign trail has been an enjoyable trip. He looks forward to ending strong, meeting everyone he can in Brunswick, Columbus and Pender Counties.
Wednesday we will introduce you to Rabon's opponent former state representative turned insurance broker David Redwine.
