BREVARD, NC (AP) -- A Brevard man has been charged with destroying property after what authorities call a flag-burning protest got out of hand.
Multiple media outlets report that William Elford Orr II was charged Tuesday with burning personal property, larceny and malicious use of an incendiary device to damage property.
Orr is being held in the Transylvania County Jail on a $10,000 bond. It was unclear if he has an attorney.
Police say Orr brought an American flag to the Transylvania County courthouse, which he put in a trash can near the flagpole.
They say he set his flag on fire using lamp oil, which eventually caused the three county-owned flags to fall into the burning trash can.
Sheriff David Mahoney says Orr didn't explain why he burned the flag.
