CAROLINA BEACH, NC -- Tourists have moved out, and cooler weather is moving in, and the Pleasure Island Fresh Market is the newest way for locals to get involved in their local community and support their local economy. You can pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, but you can also get things to decorate your home or yourself. The later-than-usual market is a response to the disappointed shoppers and vendors from the Carolina Beach Farmer's Market, which closed in October. Locals are excited about the additional time and additional products. “I think it's great. I think it's nice that they have a variety of different things, like, they have soaps and then they have jewelry, and then they have breads and different types of things,” said Samantha Kline. Because this is a cooler-weather market, the crop is different, vegetables are heartier, and there are more meats and baked goods. Organizer Max Sussman says there's no question the products are the best you can get. “You're talking from the farm directly to the customer. You're not talking trading other people's hands, and you're not talking about traveling miles and miles to get it here. This is the freshest produce, cheese and baked goods you'll find,” said Sussman. LaGemma’s Bakery owner James Gannon feels the market gets him connected with his community. “It's best just to get out and kind of go to the people and let them know that you're here and what you do,” said Gannon. Buying locally boosts the local economy and has benefits for shoppers too. Sussman pointed out, “You're not traveling as far with the product, so you don't have the gas and all that marked up into it. It's a local product, and it's a very, very competitive price.” You can pick up great products every Saturday from 9:00am ‘til 2:00pm until December 18th.
