Runners hit the pavement in Battleship marathon

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Hundreds of runners put on their jogging shoes and hit the pavement in the Battleship Half Marathon and Battleship 5K run.

The 12th annual Carolina Sports Medicine Battleship North Carolina half marathon and Bay Six Battleship 5K is a USATF certified half marathon that begins and ends at the Battleship North Carolina.

The course crosses two bridges over the Cape Fear River, makes its way through downtown Wilmington, tours Greenfield lake, and returns to the battleship by way of the Memorial Bridge.

The run is a benefit for American troops. Runners say the camaraderie kept them running.

"The toughest part was getting out of bed this morning," said runner Ray Beatty. "Then when I did that and got here going over the bridge there kind of got me down a little bit but everyone motivated each other to complete it."

Ray Beatty is a former marine and says he's glad he can give back to the troops he served with during his time in the military.
