COLUMBUS, Ohio - Fourth-ranked Ohio State scored 14 of the first 16 points and coasted to an 81-41 victory over UNCW in an installment of the Global Sports Invitational on Saturday at cavernous Value City Arena. The Buckeyes remained perfect at 3-0 on the season following convincing wins over North Carolina A&T, Florida and UNCW. The Seahawks had their two-game winning streak snapped and stand 2-2 in Buzz Peterson's first season. "You have to give Ohio State credit," said Peterson. "They have a very good team, no doubt about it. I just want us to learn from this experience. We've just got to stick together and learn from it." Freshman forward Deshaun Thomas paced five Buckeyes in double figures with 17 points. Junior guard William Buford chipped in 12 points, freshman center Jared Sullinger and freshman guard Jordan Siebert added 11 points apiece and senior guard Lighty had 10 for OSU. Junior guard Matthew Wallace poured in a career high 14 points and senior guard Chad Tomko pitched in 13 for the Seahawks, who shot a frigid 31.6 percent on the night. OSU, meanwhile, wound up connecting on 45.3 percent from the field. The Buckeyes took advantage of UNCW's cold shooting right off the bat to speed to a 14-2 start and put the Seahawks in a hole early. OSU scored the first seven points of the game before Tomko grabbed a loose ball and converted a layup with 15:08 left to get the Seahawks on the board. OSU then put together an 11-2 run to extend the margin to 18-4 at the 12-minute mark. Sullinger and Thomas each made a layup to push the margin to 14 points. Tomko drained a triple from the left wing to slice the deficit to 24-11 with 8:26 left in the first half, but the Buckeyes closed out the stanza by outscoring UNCW, 24-5, to take a comfortable 48-16 lead into intermission. OSU quickly scored the first eight points of the second half to increase the margin to 56-16 before recording its largest lead of the game, 75-26, when reserve guard Lenzelle Smith, Jr., dropped in a layup with nine minutes left. The Seahawks outscored the Buckeyes, 15-6, the rest of the way for the final 40-point difference. Wallace scored UNCW's final six points, including a jumper from the right wing with 30 seconds left in the contest. The Seahawks wrap up their pre-Thanksgiving schedule on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tip-off against North Carolina A&T at the Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro.
