WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- This year you don't have to wait until the day after Thanksgiving to get great deals. Several stores including Target and JC Penney are starting their Black Friday sales a little earlier this year.
With Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, that leaves one less weekend for holiday shopping. In order for retailers to make up for the lost weekend, many are starting their sales early.
JC Penney store manager Tom Saffron says this time of year represents the largest part of annual sales and profits for all retailers.
"It's essential that we get our best foot forward and gather up all the customers that we can," Saffron says.
Target is also starting their holiday sales before Thanksgiving. They are having a four day pre-Black Friday sale that started Sunday and will end Wednesday night. Erica Rodgers, an Executive Team Leader at Target says the sale will not effect holiday shopping after Thanksgiving.
"I definitely think that by having these great sales and everything, people will get their shopping done, but ultimately, I don't think it will decrease a lot of our guest traffic," Rodgers says.
For shoppers looking to avoid crowds, pre-Black Friday sales can be a relief. But some shoppers, like Delores Hamilton, say nothing can beat Friday's sales.
"I think the day of Friday is the best day to shop. You can really save a lot of money. I have learned that," Hamilton says.
Though pre-Thanksgiving sales are expected to increase the overall holiday shopping profit, Erica Rodgers says Black Friday will still be the biggest shopping day of the year.
