Hurricanes bring back Cullen in deal with Rangers

Story body

RALEIGH (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes are bringing back a familiar face from their Stanley Cup title run of 2006.

The Hurricanes acquired center Matt Cullen from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Andrew Hutchinson along with a prospect and a draft pick.

Cullen had career-highs with 25 goals and 49 points as the Hurricanes' third-line center in 2006. He also had four goals and 14 assists in the playoffs, including two assists in the Game Seven win against Edmonton in the Cup finals.

Cullen signed with the Rangers as a free agent last summer and the Hurricanes struggled to fill Cullen's spot and failed to make the playoffs.

Carolina also sent forward Joe Barnes and a third-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft to the Rangers.
