WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It's time to get the menorahs out because it's the first night of Hanukkah.
Hanukkah is the festival of lights for Jews and it only comes once a year. Many Jews light menorahs during the holiday to celebrate everything they've overcome. In Jerusalem, the candelabra was lit with only enough oil for one day, but it miraculously burned for eight days. Chabad of Wilmington is a local synagogue and members say Hanukkah is one of their favorite holidays.
"It's a holiday in which a small amount of people fought for something that was very near and dear to them for a chance to practice their religion the way they saw it fit and they overcame the greatest odds," said Rabbi Moshe Lieblich.
Chabad of Wilmington will have a party at their center on Market Street Thursday night and they will also have a menorah lighting in downtown Wilmington on Saturday night.
