WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- In the spirit of giving a Wilmington church is donating their time and other items to help Haitians start a new life in America. Many Haitians are coming to North Carolina because it's the only state where they can find jobs.

Jesus Ministries Church and Outreach is lending a helping hand. From toys and furniture to appliances and beds all the donations were loaded into an 18-wheeler truck.

"It's like we needed to move things and they needed it so it was just such a blessing to be able to do that," said Brenda McEntee, who is the director at Jesus Ministries Church and Outreach. "It's god. He does things in big ways."

Many Haitians left their homeland because of the aftermath from January's earthquake, but for others they left just for their own personal reasons. Pastor Pierre Pognon serves as the immigrants' translator and says Florida is typically where Haitians move, but the problem is there's no jobs in Florida.

"It's very tough in Florida right now," said Pognon. "There's no jobs for them and there's nothing for them to do and they have families to take care of so they are here in North Carolina to start over."

Pognon says many Haitians are now moving to North Carolina to work at turkey plants in Mount Olive. While they have jobs, there are still a lot of things they do not have.

"They get here and they don't have money to buy clothing, to buy beds, furniture, and they're sleeping on the floor," said Pognon. "There's no beds for them. There's nothing for them."

Volunteers say they will keep working hard until these Haitians are happily settled in North Carolina.
