Gone but never forgotten

READ MORE: Gone but never forgotten

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A tragedy you hope and pray will never happen to your family. A local family is mourning the loss of their mother after her determination to help her grandbaby cost her own life.

Life will never be the same.

Marnita Davis says she never thought it would never happen to her. Davis says her mother always put others first.

For Anna Brown it was her natural instinct to take care of others and that instinct kicked in Sunday when her granddaughter needed help.

"She loved children," said Brett Brown. Brett is one of six children that Anna leaves behind. "That's the main cause of everything right there, but her devotion to children was just incredible."

Anna's grandchild Naveah suffered a gash to her face when she was playing with the family dog. Instead of calling 911, Anna jumped in her car with her grandbaby and rushed to the hospital. Anna ran a red light and another car crashed into Anna's and the car was thrown into a utility pole. She did not survive the crash.

Brett says he was in his car when he got the call about his mom. "It was hard because I was in the middle of traffic so I had to pull over and let it out for a bit and then get down here as fast as I could," said Brett.

Anna's children are taking comfort remembering her giving spirit.

"Too giving," said Marnita. "To the point where she hardly had time for us and we were a little jealous of that but now I totally appreciate it. I mean my mom gave of herself so much that I think she gave too much."

Anna gave the most to her grandchildren.

"What we know in our hearts is our mom did what's best at that point in time for her grandchild and she was trying to find her the help that she needed and my mom gave her life protecting her grandchild," said Marquita Brown.

Naveah is still in the hospital. She had facial reconstruction Monday and is on her way to getting better.
The Brown family has not made any funeral arrangements.
