Working cannon to stand guard at NC's Fort Macon

GOLDSBORO, NC (AP) -- North Carolina's Fort Macon is bringing back the sounds of the Civil War with an operational cannon that weighs 4,200 pounds. The 20-foot long replica cannon will journey Wednesday from
Wayne Community College in Goldsboro to the Fort Macon park near Morehead City. It will make stops in Kinston and New Bern along the way.

State park system spokesman Charlie Peek says officials purchased the cannon for about $19,000, and students at Wayne Community College have been working for more than a year to build a carriage to hold it.

Fort Macon currently has two inoperable cannons. The state park staff will be training a crew to fire the new one in demonstrations starting early next year.
