WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover Regional Medical Center is lending a helping hand all the way to Africa. It's called the Mission Ready Program.
Hospital employees spent this year collecting expired medical and surgical supplies that cannot be used here in the US because of strict guidelines. Items like gurneys, wheelchairs and syringes are being shipped to Kenya.
New Hanover Regional's EMS Director Ted Winneberger said this could not have come at a better time.
"I think it's really appropriate that all this is happening at Christmas, because the whole point of Christmas is to help those in need and those suffering," he said. "That was the gift if Christmas, we've been given something, we've been blessed with something and therefore we should be doing something with that."
Today's shipment was in honor of Allen Pate. Pate was recently diagnosed with cancer. He is also the hospital employee who helped organize the Mission Ready Program.
