Azalea Festival to feature student's art

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Azalea Festival is still months away, but organizers revealed another part of the celebration today. Snipes Academy third grader Lemir Moore is the winner of the festival's student art contest.

Students at 11 Cape Fear schools participated. The only prompt the children got was to "let their fingers do the talking while they painted their favorite part about the Azalea Festival."

Lemir says his love for clowns and his dad were his motivators.

"'Cause he told me if I keep drawing, I'll get better at it," Lemir said of his dad. "And he's a good drawer too."

Snipes art teacher Melony Connor says Lemir has natural talent and will represent snipes and the festival well.

"He always wants to draw," she said. "He always wants to create, and he is always expanding on his work."

Lemir's art will be on display at the airport, and prints will be available at the Azalea Festival in April.
