Defense bill includes two major NC provisions

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A defense spending bill on President Barack Obama's desk includes two provisions relating to longstanding controversies in North Carolina.

Sens. Kay Hagan and Richard Burr included language in the bill that requires the Navy to help with the completion of studies into whether there have been problems with contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune. A federal agency is currently researching possible past contamination at the Marine base.

Another amendment secured by the senators requires the Navy to submit a report on existing military airfields along the East Coast before considering a new landing field. The Navy has identified five sites for a new so-called outlying landing field, two in North Carolina and three in Virginia. Local and state officials oppose the idea.
