GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Police are investigating the death of an 8-year-old boy who was involved in a shooting at his home.

Authorities say rescue workers arrived at Andre Wilder's home in Goldsboro Tuesday afternoon and found him unresponsive. He later died at the hospital.

Andre's mother, Shenita Wilder-Dancy, says the boy was playing with a gun when her other son, 12-year-old Kris Wilder, tried to intervene. Their mother says the gun then went off accidentally and hit Andre.

Andre's body was taken to the state medical examiner in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

Police are still investigating won't confirm or deny the family's account of what happened.
