SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) -- The new year wasn't a celebration for everyone. A Brunswick County man is home from the hospital after a weekend attack. Now the community is buzzing about what they think happened.

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old Arthur David Todd was attacked around 12:30 a.m. on New Year's Eve. It happened on Lakewood Drive in Shallotte's Lakewood Estates.

"It could be possibly multiple subjects at this time," BCSO spokeswoman April Stanley said. "It's still pending investigation. There was also a weapon used, but it is also still pending at the time."

Although there are not many answers, there are plenty of questions. One concerned neighbor contacted WWAY asking for help on figuring out what was going in their neighborhood.

Many folks say they are concerned with their safety, which is why they do not want to talk on camera. They say they are worried the attack is gang related. Co-owner of Lakewood Estates Chris Chappel says the community has nothing to worry about.

"We're trying to find out just what the truth is of what happened, because we want our residents to feel safe here at Lakewood Estates," Chappel said. "We don't want no improper rumors going around that it was gang related. We're trying to find out what the truth is and just as I told you, when we find the truth out, you'll be the first to know."

Chappel said the subdivision is doing everything they can to keep the community safe, and residents should remain calm. For now, he says it's business as usual.

"Right now, do like always," Chappel said. "Lock your doors. Be safe. Just watch, anything that's unusual, report it to 911."

Both Chappel and the Sheriff's Office hope to have more answers soon.

Although investigators say Todd is home from the hospital, we were unable to find him at his home today for comment.
