Raleigh city council may ban smoking in city parks

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- North Carolina's capital city may join the thousands of people with resolutions to stop smoking. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Raleigh's city council is scheduled to discuss an ordinance Tuesday that would ban smokers from city parks.

A council-appointed parks board unanimously approved the ban in November. Supporters said it was needed because the city doesn't have the money to clean up the cigarette butts smokers leave behind.

The move comes a year after a state law took effect banning indoor smoking in restaurants and bars. That law also gave municipalities the authority to regulate smoking in other public areas.

Raleigh residents who oppose the ban say the city shouldn't tell people where they can and can't smoke.
