ASHEBORO, NC (AP) -- One of the oldest and most popular residents of the North Carolina Zoo has been euthanized after a lengthy illness. Zoo officials say Alice, a 41-year-old Southern white rhinoceros was euthanized on Tuesday.
Senior veterinarian Dr. Ryan DeVoe said Alice had been under treatment for chronic foot infections for three years that recently progressed to the point that the animal was in constant pain. DeVoe said foot infections combined with other problems associated with her age and skin lesions that had developed as a reaction to pain medications had diminished Alice's quality of life.
Alice came to the zoo in September 1976 as one of two Southern white rhinos on display in temporary exhibits and holding paddocks used to exhibit animals before the zoo's first permanent exhibits opened in 1979.
