WPD: Drop in downtown crime in 2010

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Police Department's 2010 crime stats also looked specifically at Downtown Wilmington. The police department says violent and property crimes were down 19 percent downtown during 2010, compared to the year before.

The department says it is aware of the problems that happen at night downtown and is doing what it can to make that area safer.

"We've increased patrol down there for one. I realize we're working on a budget and times are tough and we're doing with what we can," Capt. Jeff Allsbrook said. "We've increased the presence down there. We actually pull officers from across the city for those bar closing hours. We've stated before its not really a problem until 1:30 to 2:30, 3 in the morning."

Wilmington police say they are also working closely with downtown bar and club owners.
