Coast Guard helps with skydiver rescue

READ MORE:

OAK ISLAND, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -– The Coast Guard assisted local agencies during a search for a missing skydiver who missed her mark and landed in the water near Oak Island Saturday morning.

At approximately 10 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Oak Island received a call from the Oak Island Police Department asking for assistance in the search of the skydiver, who was believed to have landed in the water about 1 mile off the Oak Island Bridge.

A 25-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Oak Island was launched at approximately 10:10 a.m., and arrived on scene by 10:17 a.m.

When the female skydiver was located, both the Oak Island Rescue team aboard their pontoon boat and the Coast Guard rescue boat crew were unable to get to her because of the marshland.

A Coast Guard rescue swimmer was taken close to the scene by the Oak Island Rescue team. He swam to the skydiver to help her back to the pontoon boat.

Oak Island Rescue transferred her to awaiting Brunswick County EMS for transportation to Dosher Memorial Hospital, in Southport.
