WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- On this MLK Day, a part of Wilmington's Martin Luther King Center was dedicated to a man who served as a mentor for countless children. Despite the rain, people gathered at the corner of 8th and Ann Streets to remember Coach William Murphy. The City of Wilmington named the athletic fields at the MLK Center in honor of Murphy and unveiled the new sign today. Murphy was a wilmington native and believed in discipline and excellence through organized sports. "He coached generations of families' children, and then their children and then their children's children, so he has a long-standing commitment and belief and hard work," Murphy's widown Audrie said. Coach Murphy died in October 2009 just days before his Wilmington Tigers football team played in their league's championship game. His family hopes to continue Coach Murphy's legacy and set up a non-profit in his name. For more information visit
