NEWTON, NC (AP) -- The stepmother of a disabled North Carolina girl who died under mysterious circumstances has been indicted on a charge of bigamy.
The indictment was issued Tuesday. It accuses Elisa Baker of marrying Zahra Baker's father when the North Carolina woman was still legally married to another man.
Court documents show Elisa Baker's marriage to Aaron Young ended in August 2009. But The Associated Press has interviewed people who attended her marriage ceremony to Adam Baker more than a year before that in Australia.
In North Carolina, bigamy is a low level felony.
Calls to lawyers representing Baker were not immediately returned Tuesday.
Elisa Baker is currently in jail on charges of obstructing the investigation into her stepdaughter's disappearance last fall.
