NC House Democrats elect deputy leader, whips

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The outgoing No. 2-ranked leader of the North Carolina House has been named deputy minority leader by fellow Democrats for the next two years.

The House Democratic Caucus elected Rep. William Wainwright of Craven County on Wednesday to the post during a meeting in the Legislative Building. He's been the speaker pro tempore for the past four years while Rep. Joe Hackney of Orange County was speaker. Both are likely to give way to Republicans when the General Assembly session begins next week and the GOP assumes control of the chamber.

The caucus elected Hackney minority leader last month. Democrats also agreed on five colleagues to become minority whips. The caucus also announced Hackney spokesman Bill Holmes will keep working for Hackney this coming session.
