Gravely crew to help next Honor Flight

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Two months after coming to town for the commissioning of their Navy destroyer, the crew of the USS Gravely is giving back to our community.

Members of the crew will accompany veterans from southeastern North Carolina on the next honor flight. The flight take 102 World War II vets to Washington, DC, to visit the memorial that stands in their honor.

The vets will not pay for the trip, so Honor Flight of Southeastern North Carolina is asking for monetary donations of any kind.

"We do not accept any money from World War II veterans," Honor Flight of SENC president Jason McLeod said. "This trip is completely free to them, and that's a great way for the community to reach out and support them. Our greatest support has come from people who want to sponsor a veteran, and that sponsorship level is around $400.

If you'd like to donate, visit

The honor flight takes off April 20 from Wilmington International Airport.
