NC lawmakers to vote on health overhaul challenge

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The first legislation to get a full vote in this year's session of the North Carolina General Assembly would attack a key provision of the federal health care overhaul law.

Republican leaders in the state House have scheduled debate and a possible vote Wednesday.

The measure aims to block a provision requiring people to buy insurance beginning in 2014 or pay a penalty. It also aims to force Attorney General Roy Cooper to join a lawsuit to challenge the law.

Democrats say the measure could prevent hundreds of thousands of people from obtaining health insurance.

A federal judge in Florida on Monday declared last year's federal law unconstitutional, including the mandate to buy insurance. The issue will likely have to reach the US Supreme Court to be resolved.
