NC lawmakers discuss outlawing fake marijuana

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A North Carolina legislative panel is looking at whether to ban a legal chemical sold as incense that is designed to mimic the effects of marijuana.

A state Senate committee on Thursday considers legislation that would outlaw a synthetic compound commonly known as "Spice" or "K2.". The product mixes herbs and spices and is then sprayed with a chemical compound similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

About a half-dozen states and at least 10 military installations around the country including Fort Bragg have prohibited the substance.

Besides being legal in most states, the synthetic marijuana is also difficult to discover through drug testing.
