WILMINGTON -- The deadline has passed and the candidates are ready to go. A dozen candidates have filed to run for the Wilmington City Council. Some of them are already speaking out. Laura Padgett has been on Wilmington's City Council for 12 years and is running to keep her seat. Three council seats are open, with candidates like Padgett and Pat Delair, vying to stay onboard. Padgett touched on key issues Monday including Wilmington's troubled sewer system and the controversial convention center. She says her experience and knowledge on these topics is an asset. Padgett said, "Certainly, no one gets to where they are by themselves and council has been working well as a group the last few years. We've accomplished a lot and that's the key -- to work with other people to get things done." Padgett says she'll be investing both time and money into her campaign and will be reaching out to the community over the next few months.
