NC appeals court hears charter school funding case

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A North Carolina appeals court will consider a charter school's lawsuit claiming its funding should be calculated from a pie that includes Head Start and other early childhood education funds.

The state Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear arguments Wednesday on a lawsuit by Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. The Rutherford County school enrolls about 1,100 students from kindergarten to 12th grade.

A ruling is weeks or months away.

The school board says the additional money should not be included in the school's funding calculation because the charter school doesn't offer the early childhood education programs.
